DRUG TREATMENT
COURT
The purpose of drug treatment court is to break the vicious
cycle of drug abuse and related criminal activity. Studies have
shown that in recent years arrests for drugs related crimes have
more than doubled. Throughout the nation, there are some growing
perceptions that drug addiction is an illness not a crime, and
that substance abusers need detoxification and Drug rehabilitation,
not jail.
Drug treatment court offers individuals who
have committed drug or alcohol related crimes, a choice of drug
rehab instead of jail time. Drug Treatment courts can drop the
original charges, suspend a sentence, or offer a lesser penalty
in exchange for successful completion of a drug rehab program.
A specific set of rules and expectations of the addict's performance
is strictly applied and closely monitored, by the drug rehab
center and the drug treatment court. This can include random
urine testing as well as drug treatment court appearances. Consequences
for a noncompliance could result in more court appearances or
reinstatement of the original sentence.
Evidence has shown from states offering drug
courts that these drug rehab programs are successfully helping
addicts enslaved by heroin, Oxycontin, methamphetamine, crack/cocaine,
alcohol, and other addictive drugs overcome old drug taking behaviors
and learn to live sober productive lives. Success rates
very depending on the addict and the drug rehab program selected.
Drug treatment courts can be more effective than traditional
courts for substance abusers who commit nonviolent crimes to
acquire more drugs to support their addiction.
