has been damaged by drug abuse must be healed. Recovering
completely from the destruction physical health,
emotional strength, coping skills, social skills, confidence,
self-esteem, integrity, spiritual well being, life skills and
life goals, all must be restored and developed. Through the
right drug
treatment program, individuals can acquire the tools
and life skills necessary to live a successful drug-free life.
They also develop the ability and confidence to continue to
apply these skills for the rest of their life. No one should
ever have to go through the terror of drug addiction even once,
let alone twice or three times.
How can I tell if myself or loved one is addicted to drugs or alcohol?
If a person has a compulsion to use drugs or alcohol regularly
and continuously and despite repeated negative consequences, continues
to abuse drugs or alcohol, then this person is addicted. How to identify if a loved one in on drugs. Or if you yourself think you may be addicted but aren't sure visit is rehab right for you?
How will we know if drug rehabilitation is needed?
If you or your loved one has progressed through stages of drug
use, to drug abuse or drug addiction, then most certainly some type of rehabilitation
program will be necessary for a successful and permanent recovery.
knowing what to do first. The first thing you must do is
to find the right drug rehab center. Whether the addicted individual
wants help or not, the first step is to setup the treatment preparations.
This is vitally important because at the very moment the addict
is willing to receive drug rehabilitation assistance you must act!
You may have only a small window of opportunity before the addict
changes his or her mind. If you haven't established a drug rehab
before hand, you could easily lose the opportunity
to get your loved-one into treatment. You should gather
as much information as possible about the person and their
drug history so that our drug treatment case workers may best help
procure the appropriate drug rehab centers. Our staff is knowledgeable
on the different types of drug
addiction treatment available and the various approaches and
can assist you through this process. Once you have made all the preparations and arrangements
for admission into a drug treatment center the next step is to
get the individual into the program as soon as possible. If the
addict is in denial or refuses to get help, you will need to make
preparations for a drug intervention.
If the addict is willing to attend
rehabilitation but does not seem serious, can the drug treatment
work? Yes, but a longer, more comprehensive, intensive
rehab program is recommended. It is very uncommon for a
substance abuser to want to enter drug rehab. As miserable
and unmanageable as an addict's life may become, rehab is
out of their comfort zone. Most users will avoid drug treatment
as long as possible and usually not intel the pain and problems
associated with the drug use out weigh the perceived benefits.
But for many individuals that day may never accure and if the family
doesn't get tough and intervene, the chemically dependent individual
may wind up in jail or die as a result of the alcohol
or drug abuse.
Will drug detoxification be needed? If so, what kind of detoxification method should be used?
It depends on the substance the addict is addicted to. Opiate addictions
such as heroin, Oxycontin,
and other opiate pain medications will require some form of drug
detoxification in almost all cases. Although withdrawal symptoms
of opiate addiction are not usually life threatening, the pain
from "cold turkey" withdrawals (just stopping
with no detoxification and no medical assistance) are very extreme,
and can lasts longer than a week. That method of withdrawal is
typically unsuccessful. Withdrawal symptoms from opiate addiction
are so painful that an addict will go to great lengths to avoid
the symptoms. Even lying, cheating, stealing and manipulating
family and friends is not uncommon behavior. So it is important
to know the best options for
drug detoxification and treatment. Also imperative to understand
that medically assisted detoxification by itself, without a
treatment plan is typically futile. It takes drug rehabilitation
and detox to recover from most drugs.
Types of addictions: Addictions to drugs such as methamphetamine (speed, crystal
meth, crank, ice), LSD, PCP, ecstasy and marijuana do
not generally require medically assisted withdrawal or drug detoxification
because the physical withdrawal effects are less severe. It is
important to understand, however, that even though the symptoms
of withdrawal aren’t as extreme, drugs such as cocaine, crack,
and methamphetamine are very addictive. An addiction to these drugs
is very serious. Curing an addiction to these drugs requires a
highly comprehensive drug rehab program, often involving a withdrawal
period followed by an intensive rehabilitation program to
ensure a full and successful recovery.
The withdrawals from an addiction to alcohol,
barbiturates (Phenobarbital), or minor-tranquilizers such as Xanax,
Valium, Clonipin, and Adivan are life threatening, and require
medical detoxification followed by an alcohol rehab or drug rehabilitation
to treat the whole persons' addiction.
